Fear of flying is definitely not a rational fear, and yet as many as 1 in 6 adults share at least some traits of this particular phobia. Despite the evidence that statistically speaking air travel is actually very safe countless people around the world remain too scared to fly, which can prevent them from seeing the world, and even loved ones.
A quick internet search will provide the reader with a whole of facts and figures proving the safety of air travel. For example, the Aircraft Crashes Record Office (ACRO) compiles statistics on aviation accidents of aircraft capable of carrying more than six passengers, not including helicopters, balloons, or fighter planes. They record that there were 156 accidents in 2008, 122 in 2009, and 130 in 2010. When you consider just how many flights take place every year you can understand just how unlikely an air crash is to happen.
However, for people who are afraid to fly these statistics will provide little consolation. Luckily help is at hand with some useful techniques for training yourself to be more relaxed when flying. By preparing yourself before you travel you will be much more likely to enjoy, or at least be able to relax during, the flight.
The first technique is to become used to the view of the inside of an aeroplane cabin. You can do this by searching online for a picture of the inside of a plane, preferably similar to the one you'll be flying on. You then make this picture the background image of your computer desktop. This way, every time you switch on your computer you'll be faced with this view of an airline passenger. Over time you'll condition yourself to be completely unmoved by this view, and your initial feelings of anxiety will disappear.
A similar method is to search online for videos of aeroplanes, particularly those that are taking off and landing. Watch them over and over again, and find yourself becoming accustomed to the sights and sounds. It may be worthwhile here to concentrate on your breathing to ensure that you are as relaxed as possible.
One thing which you should definitely avoid is any news reports on plane crashes. It is very unlikely that this will occur before you fly anyway, but on the rare occasion it does the media will sensationalize the reports for added effect, and you will find all your old fears and anxieties come flooding back. Instead focus on the positive advancements you have made, and remember that help is always available with online fear of flying courses and books.
